Christian Zionists are radical evangelical Christians. Their belief in “dispensations” are embodied in today’s cult known as Christian Zionism. They believe that the modern racist State of Israel is the “fulfillment of Biblical prophesy.” As retired American diplomat William N. Dale has pointed out,
Christian Zionists do not accept the statements of Christ and other early Christian leaders that criticize Old Testament practices. Instead, they project Old Testament practices and prophesies into today’s world.
Apparently, because of this practice, Christian Zionists believe that torture, assassination of political leaders, ethnic cleansing, war, and racist governments are acceptable if they “bless” the State of Israel.
Another Christian observer, Rev. Charles Carlson of We Hold These Truths, makes it more personal, saying Christian Zionism is a “dangerous mental illness, already infecting a third of US voters.”
Christian Zionists (more than other Christians) favor torture of the accused. This fact is documented in a survey by The Pew Research Center Forum on Religion & Public Life.
It shows that currently, more than six-in-ten white evangelical Protestants (62%) say that the use of torture against suspected terrorists in order to gain important information can be often or sometimes justified. This is significantly higher than the number of white mainline Protestants (46%) and religiously unaffiliated (40%) who say torture can be often or sometimes justified.
Prominent radical evangelical Christian Zionists say assassination of political leaders is justified. Christian broadcaster Rev. Pat Robertson recommended assassinating Hugo Chavez, the leader of Venezuela:
“We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability.”
Prof. Tom Flanagan, an extremist Christian Zionist and a former advisor to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper (himself a Christian Zionist), said:
“Assange should be killed.”
Of course, all these armchair assassins apologize when their dumb beliefs are made public, and if their statements cut into their donors’ contributions.
Radical Christian Zionists say ethnic cleansing has been ordained of God. However, a leading Israeli author and professor, Ilan Pappe, says ethnic cleansing is an Israeli war crime and must be addressed. Here’s a synopsis from Publishers Weekly on Amazon.com:
Pappe demonstrates how ethnic cleansing was not a circumstance of war, but rather a deliberate goal of combat for early Israeli military units led by David Ben-Gurion, whom Pappe labels the “architect of ethnic cleansing.” The forced expulsion of 800,000 Palestinians between 1948-49, Pappe argues, was part of a long-standing Zionist plan to manufacture an ethnically pure Jewish state. Framing his argument with accepted international and UN definitions of ethnic cleansing, Pappe follows with an excruciatingly detailed account of Israeli military involvement in the demolition and depopulation of hundreds of villages, and the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Arab inhabitants…Pappe argues that the ethnic cleansing of Palestine continues today, and calls for the unconditional return of all Palestinian refugees and an end to the Israeli occupation.
Christian Zionists fervently favor wars, especially wars that favor Israel. In fact, they call for a global war, the earlier the better. One writer aptly describes this zeal for war as “Terror In Jesus’ Name.”
The Zionist war with Libya was mobilized by Christian Zionist Hillary Clinton:
“The alliance mobilized by the deeply Christian-Zionist Hillary Clinton to fight Gaddafi got “Yes” from 10 out of 15 UN Security Council members, while half of humanity (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and Germany) abstained.”
Rev. Dr. Stephen Sizer of the United Kingdom reaches this conclusion in his book Christian Zionism:
Christian Zionism is an exclusive theology that focuses on the Jews in the land rather than an inclusive theology that centres on Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world. It consequently provides a theological endorsement for racial segregation, apartheid and war. This is diametrically opposed to the inclusive theology of justice, peace and reconciliation which lie at the heart of the new covenant. (p. 260 in my autographed copy)
Journalist, poet, and peace activist, Richard Edmondson, describes in detail the war mentality of Christian Zionist Rev. John Hagee:
Hagee even defends the bombing of the King David Hotel
Frank Schaeffer writing in the Huffington Post, concludes that “with God on our side” and
With “friends” like the Christian Zionists and the neoconservatives Israel, America, our men and women in uniform, the Palestinians and the rest of humanity need no enemies.
Leading evangelical Christian Zionists favor apartheid laws and racist governments, yet claim to be democratic.
In conclusion, we must ask why do Christian Zionists support torture, assassination, ethnic cleansing, war, and racist governments? The simple answer, I believe, is given by Rev. Dr. Stephen Sizer, who says that Christian Zionists are
dedicated to instigating a war with Israel’s enemies in the mistaken belief that Jesus will return to vindicate them.
Christians instigating war? Sadly, this is what is happening. It is happening because Christian Zionists have decided to worship the racist State of Israel, rather than the God of the New Testament.
